In Sweet Home Alabama, Witherspoon played budding New York City fashion designer Melanie, who becomes engaged to her eligible sweetheart Andrew . But in order to live their happily ever after, she has to go home to Alabama and get her first husband Jake to sign divorce papers. Jake refuses to divorce her until one night she gets drunk and explains to everyone in the bar that the reason she married Jake was because she was pregnant, and she later had a miscarriage. When she wakes up the next morning, the divorce papers are laying on her bed signed by Jake. Hailed as a rising star in the world of fashion, the young New York designer is head-over-heels in love with the handsome and eligible son of the city’s mayor . When Andrew unexpectedly pops the big question, only one small problem stands between this girl and her newfound happiness…a husband she married in high school.

Melanie reconciles with her friends and learns that after she split with Jake, he had followed her to New York to win her back.

During Melanie and Andrew's wedding at the Carmichael estate, a lawyer arrives and halts the ceremony. Melanie confesses that she still loves Jake and cancels the wedding. She and Andrew wish each other well, though Kate berates Andrew and insults Melanie, her family, and the entire town, for which Melanie punches her in the face. Melanie finds Jake at the beach planting lightning rods in the sand during a rainstorm to create more glass sculptures. She tells him they are still married, they return to what would have been Melanie and Andrew's reception, and finally, have their first dance as husband and wife.
Melanie tells him that she did not marry Andrew because she wanted to be with him so that she could kiss him whenever she wanted too. As Jake and Melanie kiss, Wade, the town sheriff, interrupts them by taking them back Jake's mother's bar, where all of their friends and family are waiting. With sexual content limited mostly to comments, kissing and some implied relations, profanities are this film’s biggest problem. Alcohol use and drunkenness are depicted, but at least some consequences result from the behavior unlike a solidly delivered punch that carries no penalty for assault.

Viewers expecting a laugh-out-loud comedy should stay home. Viewers, however, who would rather see a charming, cute love story that debunks some Southern stereotypes might just want to check this movie out. Now, with another Southerner occupying the White House, Hollywood has seen fit to capitalize on the popularity of this song by releasing a new romantic comedy featuring the song, and also using its title. The song remains a staple in southern and classic rock, and is arguably the band's signature song. SWEET HOME ALABAMA is more interested in telling the story of how Melanie regains her Southern roots than it is in generating lots of big laughs.
